The threat posed to the ruling order by a combination of black and white farmers in the agricultural South and workers in the industrial Northexpressed most clearly in the Populist movement of the 1890sgave rise to the promotion of racial prejudice and legal Jim Crow segregation in the former slave states, along with de facto segregation in the cities.
